Friendly international:
Spain vs Portugal
Betis winger Joaquín
was the only uncapped player in José Antonio Camacho's 20-man squad for
next Wednesday's friendly match with Portugal at the Olympic stadium in
Barcelona. The 20 year old youngster has done well at junior level and is
catching the eye of many of the big clubs this season. Guardiola is unavailable
as FIFA extended his ban to friendly games, and Raúl and Hierro are both
out injured, but there are still five Real Madrid players in the squad, with
Salgado returning after a two year absence. Guardiola and Raúl's places
will be taken by Baraja and Tamudo, who are both recalled. The full squad is as
follows:
Keepers: Casillas
(Real Madrid), Cañizares (Valencia).
Defenders:
Téllez (Alavés), Pujol and Sergi (Barcelona), Juanfran (Celta),
Michel Salgado (Real Madrid), Nadal (Mallorca), Curro Torres (Valencia).
Midfielders: Xavi
(Barcelona), Joaquín (Betis), Valerón (Deportivo), Mendieta
(Lazio), Iván Helguera (Real Madrid), Baraja and Vicente (Valencia).
Forwards: Diego
Tristán (Deportivo), Tamudo (Espanyol), Morientes and Munitis (Real
Madrid).
The selection is a good
indication of who is in the running for this summer's World Cup. It will also
allow Camacho to pit his side against another of the World Cup qualifiers, who
include of course Real Madrid's Figo, who is returning to the Catalan capital
for only the third time since his controversial move from FC Barcelona.
