A disappointing performance by Spain was at least enough to give them victory over the bottom team in the group, Liechtenstein. With his team all but mathematically qualified for the finals, Camacho used the game to experiment, giving Albelda and José Ignacio their first caps. Both goals came from Mendieta free kicks, with Raúl heading the first early on and Nadal adding a second seven minutes from the end. Spain can now relax, with four friendly games coming up before the World Cup finals in June next year. (05.09.01)
