Real Madrid lost their first leg tie at Bayern Munich by 2-1 thanks to two late goals from the German side. Del Bosque had surprised everyone including Geremi in his starting line up rather than a recognised striker, but it proved an inspired decision as the Camerooni international blasted his side into the lead in the eleventh minute, the ball taking an awkward bounce over the outstretched Kahn. Madrid appeared to have the game under control for the rest of the first half, and with Zidane and Raúl both passing late fitness tests to make the starting line up they seemed to be too much for their German rivals. Bayern's only reply had been a Hargreaves free kick over the bar, but Elber did give a first sign that his side were not finished with a shot on the turn that César palmed away for a corner.

Munich's revival was confirmed after the break, and Elber headed against the bar with César beaten. The international keeper seemed to be groggy after a knock, and Del Bosque was close to replacing him with Casillas. However he proved he was fully recovered saving a penalty from Effenberg after Pavón tripped substitute Salihamidzic in the area. He then made an important stop from Elber and it looked as if it was not going to be Munich's night. However Effenberg made up for his penalty miss taking Elber's pass to score from close range eight minutes from the end to the delight of club president Franz Backenbauer, and César had to make another one-handed save to stop Elber's header. Madrid went close as well when Kahn saved from Zidane, but with two minutes to go another substitute Pizarro forced the ball past César, again after combining with Elber, to set up an exciting second leg match in Madrid next Wednesday night.
