A second half penalty save
by keeper Molina from Alejandro Del Piero gave Deportivo La Coruña an
invaluable point at Juventus. Irureta had opted for a defensive line up for
this match, hoping to repeat last season's scoreless draw at the Delle Alpi
stadium, with three changes from the side who lost narrowly in Barcelona,
Romero and Sergio coming in for Capdevila and Duscher, and Scaloni moving
forward to right midfield to make room for Héctor. The main threat was
Trezeguet, top scorer in the competition, and it took a good save from Molina
early on to keep out the French international. Depor gave as good as they got
though before the break, and although Diego Tristán was heavily marked,
Scaloni tested Buffon with a long shot and Iuliano headed clear an effort from
Sergio with the keeper beaten.
As the second half
progressed though the Italians became more adventurous, and Trezeguet headed
against the foot of the post from an unmarked position. Then Scottish referee
Hugh Dallas awarded a penalty to Juventus a quarter of an hour from the end
when César brought down Del Piero, and it appeared that Depor's
defensive work had been in vain. However Molina threw himself to his right to
turn the kick around the post and save the day. The unusually small crowd
started to get on their idol's back after that, and after Amavisca cleared off
the line from Trezeguet, Irureta went even more defensive, giving up any
thought of becoming the first Spanish team to win in Turin since Real Madrid
did so 40 years ago. Duscher came on for Valerón and Djalminha and
Makaay stayed on the bench, leaving Tristán even more alone up front,
but at least they gave nothing away and return to Gallicia with an important
point in the bag. With Bayer Leverkusen and Arsenal also drawing, all four
teams are level on four points, and having two of three remaining games at
home, Depor must now be favourites to reach the quarter final. Mission
accomplished. |
