Barcelona fought back in the
second half of this match to salvage a point after falling two goals behind to
Galatasaray. After recent disappointing performances by the Catalan side,
Rexach left De Boer, Overmars and Gabri on the bench and gave a start to
Rochemback, with the so called 'trident' of Kluivert, Saviola and Rivaldo
playing up front. However the Turkish side caught the Barcelona defence off
their guard early on, Umit Karan getting ahead of Andersson to poke a cross
from the left past Bonano. Either side had their chances, but once again it was
Ergun on the left who laid the ball in shortly before half time for Fleurquin
to score after Bonano parried Karan's header.
The home crowd whistled
their players off at the break, but Rexach brought on Gerard and Overmars and
the two combined to set up Saviola four minutes later. That brought the fans
back on their side, and shortly after Capone was sent off for the visitors for
a high tackle on Rivaldo. With a one man advantage Barça equalised,
Rivaldo chesting down a cross from Overmars for Saviola to score his second of
the night. Suddenly a win was on the cards, and Mondragón made a superb
save from Cocu as Barça threw everyone forward. But Galatasaray closed
ranks, and the Turkish side held on for a valuable point despite ending up with
nine men after Hakan Unsal picked up a second yellow card in injury time. A
goal-less draw between Roma and Liverpool meant that Barcelona still head the
group on four points, with Roma and Galatasaray on two and Liverpool with one.
