Mallorca lost their second
match in a row and now have no chance of qualifying for the second stage. The
Spanish side were up against it from the start when Engonga hurt himself in the
pre-match warm up, and he had to sit the game out together with the injured
Roa, Fernando Niño and Ibagaza and the suspended Eto'o. Honours were
even until midway through the second half, with Bergkamp going close with a
brilliant chip which went just wide and Campano shooting wide at the other end
with the goal at his mercy. However Arsenal scored twice in rapid succession
through Pires and Bergkamp, both coming from slack marking by the Mallorca
defenders, and the visitors were on the rocks.
Novo did pull one back, and
at that time Mallorca were still in with a chance if results went in their
favour in the last match. But with nobody aware in their side that the away
goal had given them an advantage, they risked too much, and after Pires had had
a goal ruled out for offside, an injury time goal from Arsenal's best man
Thierry Henry gave Arsenal a 3-2 direct aggregate score. That was vital, and
with Arsenal three points ahead of the Spaniards on 9 points, and with
Panathinaikos winning to top the group on 12 points, Mallorca can only finish
third at best. A point against the Greeks next week would ensure that at least
they would finish above Schalke 04, who currently have three points, meaning
they would go on to play in the next round of the UEFA cup. |
