Deportivo had to fight to save a point in a match which they thought they had won with only ten minutes to go. The Gallician side took the lead in the first half through Fran, the veteran captain connecting with Sergio's cross after Pandiani had thrown off the Greek defence by completely missing the ball. Both Sergio and Fran had come in to the side after sitting out the start of Saturday's game against Bilbao, Irureta making six changes from that side under his much criticised rotation system. The tactic appeared to be working though this time as Depor dominated the match, with both Donato and Diego Tristán close to adding to their tally in the first half.

However they started to relax as the final minutes approached, and paid the price when Giannakopoulos levelled the scores ten minutes from the end when Molina failed to hold on to substitute Ofori Quaye's shot. Irureta asked Valerón to warm up, but before he could come on Ofori Quaye once again made the difference, the Nigerian tapping in a pass from ex Barcelona striker Giovanni with the defence gone walkabout. With Scaloni and Makaay already on for the injured Víctor and for Diego Tristán, Irureta still made the substitution he had planned, and it proved providential as Valerón got on the end of Mauro Silva's looping header to somehow direct the ball past the keeper with the very last kick of the match.
