A late goal by Mostovoi in the last match of the evening completed the grand slam for Spanish teams. Celta appeared to be going out on the away goal rule with the score at 1-1 when 'the Tzar' took a grip on the match. With a quarter of an hour to go he brought the best save of the night out of the promising young keeper Hildebrand who touched his free kick on to the post, and after testing the keeper again he finally slid the ball home to the delight of the local supporters. Even then he wasn't finished, a last minute free kick bouncing down off the bar and out with the keeper beaten.

The Vigo side looked as if they were going to get a hat-full in the first half, with Karpin scoring early on and countless attacks on the German goal. Gustavo López and Karpin were causing havoc down the wings, but they were unable to find an off-form Catanha, who hardly had a shot at goal. But then disaster struck with Stuttgart's first real foray into the Celta half, Blank levelling the scores with a first time volley just on half time. Celta's weak spot this season has been dead ball kicks, and once again the goal came from a corner. The strike gave the German side the confidence they were lacking, and for a few minutes after half time they came on strong, Bordon coming from the back twice to go close to Pinto's goal. But in the end Celta woke up in time and thanks to their flamboyant captain join the other three Spanish clubs in the quarter finals. As in the Spanish cup semi-final their rivals in the next round will be Barcelona, and this will be the third year in a row that they have reached the quarter final stage. Their season is back on track after seven games without defeat, and manager Víctor Fernández can rest easy. Could this be the year that they go that extra mile?
