Celta got themselves a good result in Stuttgart although they missed out in the end on a couple of chances to take a victory back to Vigo for the second leg. Karpin passed a late fitness test and joined a full strength side, with Pinto returning in goal for the cup competitions as has been the case recently. They were up against a Stuttgart side struggling in the relegation zone in Germany, with Dundee coming back from a long injury to lead the attack. A small but noisy group of Celta supporters turned up to follow their side on a cold night, and they saw their team take the initiative for a large part of the 90 minutes. Mostovoi fired a free kick against the bar in their best effort in the first half, with Balakov wasting a chance at the other end. Only in the last ten minutes did the game come alive, with Hildebrand saving his side twice, firstly after Cáceres headed Mostovoi's free kick goalwards and then in the last minute when substitute Tomás got free in front of goal. The result should be enough to take them through to a possible quarter final tie with Barcelona, although Víctor Fernández is well aware that a scoring draw in Vigo would take the Germans into the last eight in their place.
