Despite a valiant effort,
Espanyol became the third of the ten Spanish teams to drop out of Europe this
season. The 0-2 result in Montjuic a fortnight ago was always going to be
difficult to turnover against the former European champions, and in the end
Oporto's greater experience told. With an important league match on Sunday
against city rivals Barcelona on the horizon, manager Paco Flores decided to
leave some of his more tired players at home, and Tamudo, Cristóbal,
Martín Posse, Nando and Oscar didn't even board the plane. However
Galca, Roger and Manel had recovered from injuries and joined the squad. Flores
also decided to give an outing to his reserve keeper Argensó, leaving
Mora on the substitute's bench for once.
The conditions of the pitch
were not the best, and after a torrential rainstorm throughout the day, there
were even doubts whether the match would be played. This should have benefited
Espanyol, having already had to play a couple of times in Montjuic on a
waterlogged pitch, although in reality it made the ground virtually unplayable.
Serrano could have scored early on, but after a quarter of an hour the Swedish
referee Karl Erik Nielsen awarded a penalty to Oporto for a foul by
Argensó on Pena. However Esquerdinho curled the ball against a post and
Espanyol were let off the hook. With the scoreline in their favour Oporto sat
back, and De Lucas went close a couple of times as Espanyol came forward
looking for a goal. Flores put on Manel for Serrano, his first appearance for
several games, but he too could not find the way through. Espanyol were out,
and they have to pick themselves up again before their next game in the Nou
Camp. |
