Alavés got off to a
good start against the giants of Lilleström, winning the first leg 1-3
with a good all-round performance. The Norwegian side contained six players
over 1.92m tall, and technical staff were concerned about their dominance in
the air when compared to the average 1.80m height of the Spaniards. For that
reason Mané brought in an extra tall defender, Eggen at the back,
himself a fellow countryman of their opponents, and played Ibon Begoña
further forward on the left in order to cut out attacks down the wing. In the
end though Alavés were far superior to the Norwegians, who had just
finished their league in sixth place, and any thoughts of a hard battle
dissipated when Begoña headed Alonso's cross past Baron before the game
was two minutes old.
Mané has been
rotating his players in the European matches, and with Moreno and Cruyff in
reserve, Magno and Iván Alonso took up the front positions. The goals
however when they did come were scored by their defenders, with Téllez
beating the offside trap for the second in the middle of the first half, and
Contra adding the third from just over the halfway line after the restart when
he spotted the keeper off his line. With the tie already in the bag Mané
used the opportunity to bring on three players who have not had much
opportunity so far, Djolonga, Mario, and Croatian Jurica Vucko, making his
first appearance for his new club after picking up an injury at the start of
the season. Lilleström finally got a consolation goal from Helland near
the end, and with two minutes to go Alavés should have made it four
after Vucko was fouled in the penalty area. However Iván Alonso put his
spot kick over the bar. It probably didn't matter anyway, and the Vitoria based
side should have no trouble in securing their pass through to the third round
in a couple of weeks time. |
