A high scoring match in
Turkey enabled Alavés to win their first ever UEFA cup tie on Thursday
night. After controversial declarations by the Gaziantepspor coach and
preparations by the Gaziantep town mayor (who is also president of the club) to
spice up the atmosphere, the Spanish team were met by a wall of sound by the
20,000 or so spectators in the Kamil Ocak stadium. The pitch conditions were
not optimum, with heavy rain before the match adding to the poor state of the
ground, and Manés decided to delay the introduction of his first choice
strike pair, Javi Moreno and Jordi Cruyff, until the second half when he
figured that players would be tired. Into their places came Magno and
Iván Alonso, with an extra defender Eggen coming in at the back and new
signing Tomic in midfield.
The ploy worked to
perfection, and Alavés came back from 2-1 down at half time to score
three goals in 25 minutes to advance through to the next round. They were
helped however by the Turkish keeper Catkic, who let Tomic's free kick through
his hands for the visitor's second goal, and then repeated the mistake fifteen
minutes later to gift Alavés the lead. Tomic rounded things off with his
second goal for his new club, and even though Gaziantepspor got a late strike
in injury time, the result was already decided. The Turkish side were
eliminated after their first tie in Europe, but their supporters warmly
applauded their opponents and their fans after the match. Alavés go on
to play Norway's Lillestrom in the frozen North in the next round, with the
second leg thankfully in Vitoria. |
