Spanish clubs out of
Intertoto Cup 2001/2002
Spanish entries to this
year's competition have been thrown out by UEFA. The decision was taken because
neither Villarreal nor Málaga could commit themselves to participating.
But given the fact that the Spanish Cup final won't be played till 30 June (the
same weekend that the second placed qualifier would be required to play the
second round of Intertoto), the result of which would have decided who would
actually go into Intertoto, the clubs had little choice. Their places have now
been given to Newcastle Utd. and Paris Saint Germain. (21.06.01)
