Copa del Rey, semi-finals
second leg
Barcelona (1) 1 - Celta
Vigo (3) 1 Celta beat Barcelona 4-2 on aggregate to set up a repeat of
the 1994 final against Zaragoza. Berizzo put them well on the way with a headed
goal in only the third minute of the game, his second in two games after
scoring in the first leg tie. However their lead only lasted two minutes before
Kluivert took advantage of a defensive error to score. Guardiola hit the bar
with a free kick in the second half in his last game in a Blaugrana shirt, but
the visitors held on and could have won the game in the last minute when
substitute McCarthy hit the post. Both teams had a man sent off near the end,
Jesuli for Celta and Gabri for Barcelona, and the former left the field in
tears after realising that he will now miss next Saturday's final in Sevilla.

Zaragoza (2) 0 -
Atlético Madrid (0) 1 Zaragoza qualified for the final for the
first time in seven years despite losing on the night by 0-1 to Atlético
Madrid. The first fifteen minutes were incident packed, with Atlético's
Fernando Torres (broken collar bone) and Toni Muñoz (twisted ankle) both
being substituted and Zaragoza's Paco sent off rather rigorously by referee
Losantos Omar for a foul on Correa. Fagiani scored around the half hour mark,
but Zaragoza packed their defence, and when Atlético were also reduced
to ten men late in the second half when Correa incorrectly picked up a second
yellow for supposedly diving the game was all over. Zaragoza won on aggregate
2-1 and play the winner of the tie between Barcelona and Celta which will take
place tomorrow. (23.06.01) |
