European champions league
final
Valencia 1 - Bayern
Munich 1 (Bayern win 4-5 on penalties) Valencia lost their second
Champions League final in a row in the cruellest way possible, from the penalty
shoot-out. With the game level after 120 minutes of football it all boiled down
to the final lottery. However Bayern keeper Kahn saved three of Valencia's
seven kicks to give his side their first European trophy in 25 years. Referee
Dick Jol awarded three penalties in the match, with Mendieta scoring the first
for Valencia in the third minute after a defender blocked the ball with his arm
lying on the ground. Cañizares saved from a Scholl spot kick four
minutes later after Angloma had brought down Effenberg, but Jol gave another
controversial penalty early in the second half after Carboni was ruled to have
handled as he fell under Zickler's strong challenge. Effenberg converted that
one to take the game into extra time, but nobody could get the golden goal and
Kahn saved from Pellegrino at the end to break the Valencia fans' hearts.
