UEFA cup
semi-finals
Liverpool (0) 1 -
Barcelona (0) 0 Barcelona were unable to score one goal in 180
minutes of football against an orderly Liverpool defence, and ended up
being knocked out of the competition by a single penalty in the first half of
this match. The turning point of the game came after Kluivert handled the ball
in the area just before half time, McAllister converting the resulting penalty
kick. Despite spending almost the whole of the second half in Liverpool's half
of the pitch Barça didn't get one decent shot at goal, and they went
home empty handed.
Kaiserslauten (1) 1 -
Alavés (5) 4 Football is a funny game sometimes. While high
scoring Barcelona couldn't score once in two legs, last year's one nil
specialists Alavés put nine goals past one of the best teams in
Germany. They were only troubled for the first few minutes of this game when
Djorkaeff scored early on, but after Iván Alonso equalised
Kaiserslauten's challenge was over. Two second half goals by substitute
Vucko and another by Raúl Gañan completed the best night in their
history, and they return to Germany in four weeks time to play Liverpool in the
final at Dortmund. (19.04.01) |
