Champions league
quarter-finals
Real Madrid (2) 3 -
Galatasaray (3) 0 As expected Real Madrid recorded a comfortable
victory against Galatasaray to go through to a semi-final tie with
Bayern Munich. Raúl turned in Salgado's cross on the quarter hour mark
for the opener and Helguera headed a second from Figo's corner a few minutes
later. Raúl scored again to make it 3-0 before half time when McManaman
put him through, and Madrid closed ranks in a bad tempered second half to sew
up the tie. There is now a real possibility of a repeat of last year's final
between Real Madrid and Valencia. (18.04.01)
Deportivo (0) 2- Leeds
Utd (3) 0 It was a case of a goal too far for Deportivo. It was
always going to be an uphill battle to come back from the three goals scored
by Leeds in the first leg, but they gave it their best shot and in the
end only just failed to make it. Djalminha gave them the lead from the penalty
spot in the ninth minute, and when substitute Diego Tristán added a
second twenty minutes from the end there was still hope. But the English side
weathered the storm to go through to a semi-final tie with Valencia
.
Valencia (1) 1 - Arsenal
(2) 0 A late goal by Carew put Valencia through to the
semi-finals for the second year in a row. A tenacious Arsenal defence
held on to their first leg advantage right up to the last fifteen minutes
before the Norwegian striker rose above the defence to head home Angloma's
cross. Valencia qualify on the away goals rule, thanks to Ayala's strike in the
first leg two weeks ago. (17.04.01) |
