Good results all round for Spanish teams in the first leg matches of the fourth round, and with the draw already made for the quarter finals the prospect of two all-Spanish ties is not to be ruled out. A goal just before half time by Luis Enrique against AEK Athens gave FC Barcelona a good lead for the second leg. Barça held on in the second half to take the game 0-1 and end a run of 37 years since a Spanish team won in Greece. If they do go through to the quarter finals they could meet Celta, who are also favourites to qualify after a 0-0 draw away at Stuttgart.

Rayo Vallecano came back from an early Laslandes goal to beat Girondins Bordeaux 4-1 in Vallecas. De Quintana tied the scores in the first half and goals by Bolic, Quevedo and Michel in the last 20 minutes finished off the Frenchmen. Alavés have an outside chance of making it a full house for Spanish teams with a 3-3 draw against Inter Milan. Javi Moreno gave them the lead in the 43rd minute, but a goal either side of half time by Recoba and another by Vieri soon after sent them reeling. However they came back with goals by Téllez and Iván Alonso, and having drawn at home and won away in all the previous rounds they must fancy their chances. They are drawn to play the winners of Rayo's tie in the quarter finals. (15.02.01)
