Six first division teams
qualified for the quarter finals of the Spanish cup, together with one from the
second division A and one from the second division B. Barcelona
struggled at home to draw 0-0 with second division B side Torrelavega, going
through thanks to a Rivaldo goal in the first leg. Cup holders Espanyol
beat Extremadura with a late Galca penalty in a match in which new signing
Nishizawa made his home debut. Zaragoza gave Murcia no chance with a 4-1
win, José Ignacio scoring twice, and two goals too for Carlos as
Mallorca defeated Tenerife 4-0 on aggregate. Celta lost 0-1 at home to
Leganés but qualified thanks to away goals on the first leg, and
Racing Santander held on to a 0-0 draw at Bilbao to qualify thanks to
their 2-0 victory in the first leg. Last year's runners up, second division
Atlético Madrid went through after beating first division
neighbours Rayo Vallecano 0-2, with goals from Salva and Kiko, and in the all
second division derby, Granada beat their neighbours Guadix 5-4 on
penalties after neither side could score in 210 minutes of football.
