Champions League day 6:
Barcelona are out of the Champions League. Bad results early on together with a
draw on the final day between Milan and Leeds left them in third place in their
group, despite beating Besiktas 5-0 in their last match, with goals from Luis
Enrique (2), Cocu, Rivaldo (penalty) and Gabri. They do however still qualify
for the next round of the UEFA cup. Deportivo La Coruña played out their
last match at Hamburg knowing they were already qualified for the next stage of
the Champions League. They still did enough to draw 1-1, with Makaay coming on
at half time and equalising an earlier goal by Mahdavikia. The Gallicians
finished group champions and were the only team to remain undefeated for the
six games. (08.11.00)
Real Madrid and Valencia
finshed the first group stage as leaders of their respective groups, despite
disappointing results with teams packed with reserve players. Real Madrid lost
1-0 to Spartak Moscow in group A with a Geremi own goal just after half time,
and Valencia drew at home 1-1 with Heerenveen. Diego Alonso got their goal in
the tenth minute, but Venema equalised before the break. (07.11.00)
