Alavés moved up to
second place, ahead of Deportivo on goal average, with a 4-0 victory over
Oviedo. Javi Moreno opened the scoring from the penalty spot after Iván
Ania was sent off for handling the ball, and Geli added the second before half
time. Martinovic put through his own net near the end, and Jordi Cruyff got his
first goal for the club in the last minute. Rayo Vallecano beat Valladolid with
a late Bolic goal to move up to sixth, pushing Real Madrid out of the UEFA
spots. Setvalls put them in the lead on the stroke of half time, with Heinze
levelling scores in the second half. Mallorca moved level with Madrid on 14
points after beating Real Sociedad 0-1 with a last minute goal from Nadal.
Zaragoza kept up their revival with a 2-0 win over Racing Santander, with a
goal in each half by Montenegro and Jamelli, taking them out of the relegation
zone. Osasuna stay bottom after drawing 1-1 in the latest Basque derby against
Athletic Bilbao. Larrazábal put the visitors ahead from the penalty

In the second division match
of the day, Tenerife beat Atlético Madrid 1-2 with two second half goals
by Luis García to stay in top spot. Atlético's defeat takes them
back down to the relegation zone, and fans called for the resignation of club
president Jesús Gil after the game. Córdoba hold on to second
place, behind Tenerife on goal average, after coming from behind to beat bottom
club Universidad Las Palmas 2-1. Jaén are third, and Betis move ahead of
Sevilla up to fourth after winning 2-1 against Murcia. (05.11.00)
The top three sides in the
league all lost away from home in week nine matches brought forward to Saturday
to leave the championship wide open once again. Leaders Valencia lost to
Espanyol thanks to a late goal by substitute Serrano, although they stay top
thanks to the defeats of their close rivals. Second placed Deportivo twice took
the lead against Villarreal, through Djalminha and then Pandiani, but
Víctor got them level twice before Moisés scored the winner in
injury time. And Real Madrid were surprisingly beaten 3-1 by Numancia, with a
hat trick by Romania's Rosu, who only came in to the side after a late decision
by his manager. Raúl scored for Madrid after Rosu's first. Barcelona and
Celta took advantage to close up on the leaders, both winning by a single goal.
Rivaldo scored the one for Barcelona just after the interval at Las Palmas, and
Mostovoi got Celta's against Málaga, also in the second half. Both go
ahead of Real Madrid into third and fourth place respectively, a point behind
Depor and three behind Valencia, pending the result of the Alavés match
on Sunday. In the second division, Jaén moved top temporarily after
beating neighbours Sevilla 2-1 in the only match brought forward from week ten.
