Real Madrid and Valencia
fielded teams packed with reserves as they played their latest Champions League
games. Both had already qualified for the second stage in their last games, and
therefore used the opportunity to rest their star players. Madrid left out
Casillas, Hierro and Raúl, and took off Figo just after half time, but
still ran out 4-0 winners against Sporting Lisbon. Guti and Savio scored in the
first half, and two second half substitutes, McManaman and Solari, set up goals
for Morientes, who himself came on with 30 minutes to go for his first game
back after injury. Valencia's captain Mendieta was suspended and Cúper
brought in seven new faces against Olympiakos. It was too much though, and they
lost by 1-0, the only goal coming from Djordjevic from the penalty spot after
Deschamps brought down Giannakopoulos. (25.10.00) |
