Barcelona defeated Real
Madrid by two goals to zero on Luis Figo's return to the Nou Camp stadium on
Saturday night. Figo's entrance to the field of play was greeted by whistles
and jeers which continued throughout the game. Luis Enrique opened the scoring
for the home side and Simao added the second ten minutes from time. Real Madrid
have now gone eighteen years without a victory in Barcelona. The Catalans move
up to second place on 12 points, a point behind new leaders Valencia, who beat
Zaragoza 1-0 with a second half goal from Mendieta. Mallorca came back from
behind to draw at Deportivo La Coruña with a goal five minutes from time
by Luque. Valerón had given the league champions the lead six minutes
earlier. Deportivo and Real Madrid are third equal on 11 points. In the second
division, Atlético Madrid beat Elche 2-0, Betis won 0-1 at Tenerife and

R ayo Vallecano moved
second, ahead of Barcelona on goal average, after beating Real Sociedad 4-1.
Michel got a hat-trick, including two goals from free kicks, and Glaucio scored
the other. Real manager Javier Clemente could now be fired after his team have
let in ten goals in two games. Alavés move up to fifth, just behind Real
Madrid and ahead of Deportivo on goal average, after a 1-0 victory against
Espanyol, with a late goal from substitute Iván Alonso. Espanyol drop to
second bottom, a point ahead of 'red lantern' Zaragoza. Celta also dropped out
of the top spots after losing to Oviedo 3-1, with Oli getting two for the
Asturian side, and two goals apiece as well for Preciado and Amavisca (his from
the penalty spot) as Racing Santander move off the bottom with a 4-2 victory
against Numancia. Bilbao were surprised by Las Palmas 0-3 in the San Mames
stadium, with young Brazilian defender Alvaro scoring on his debut, and a
couple of headed goals for Dely Valdés in the first half gave

C órdoba moved to the
top of the second divison after beating Badajoz 2-0. They are now ahead of
Sevilla on goal average after the Andalucians could only draw 1-1 against
Getafe.Murcia rise to third with a 2-0 victory against Recreativo Huelva above
