A provisional list was released of 23 players who will form the basis for the Olympic squad. Four players from Barcelona were included, plus three each from Espanyol and Bilbao. Euro 2000 players Casillas from Real Madrid and Gerard from Barcelona have been named, and there are three players, Farinós, José Mari and Marchena, who play their football outside of Spain. Iñaki Sáez's squad is based on the under 21 side, and there are currently no plans to take any players who may be needed for the world cup qualifyer in September. This means that, although they are still under the age limit of 23, Raúl and Exteberria for example have not been selected, and the three places for players over the age of 23 will not be filled. The idea is to pick a final squad of 18, with four more names in reserve in case of injuries. Those selected will miss the first month of the new season, which could include 3 or 4 league games plus European competitions. The provisional list is as follows:

Keepers: Casillas (Real Madrid), Aranzubia (Bilbao)
Defenders: Puyol (Barcelona), Lacruz and Orbaiz (Bilbao), César and Capdevila (Deportivo), Marchena (Benfica), Sergio (Celta)
Midfield: Gerard and Xavi (Barcelona), Velamazán and De Lucas (Espanyol), Angulo and Albelda (Valencia), Farinós (Inter Milan), Jaime (Oviedo), Ismael (Racing)
Forwards: Tamudo (Espanyol), Gabri (Barcelona), José Mari (Milan), Luque (Mallorca), Mista (Tenerife)

Other names that have been mentioned are Felip, Amaya, Dorado, Ferrón and Iván Ania.
