Zaragoza went through to their first cup final in seven years despite losing their second leg match to Atlético Madrid. It was a valiant effort from Atlético, and they were able to restore an element of pride after their lamentable performance in the first leg which they lost 0-2. Caretaker manager Cantarero replaced the suspended Amaya with Santi and gave Toni Muñoz a game at left back in his last match before retiring. There was no place in the squad though for Kiko, who announced he will be leaving the club in the summer. Dani came in on the right of midfield for the injured Njegus in an aggressive line up, with youngster Fernando Torres keeping his place up front. Both Torres and Toni didn't last long however, with the striker falling badly and breaking his collarbone in the third minute and Toni going off with an ankle injury a quarter of an hour later.

In between though Zaragoza lost Paco, sent off by referee Losantos Omar for a foul on Correa which most commentators didn't think even warranted a yellow card. Luis Costa immediately took off Ferrón to fill the gap with Aguado, but that left a big hole down the right, and it was not long before the visitors made use of that to open the scoring through Fagiani, following up on the far post after Aguilera swung the ball over. Suddenly Atleti were in with a chance, but Dani wasted a couple of chances after working himself into good positions. At half time Costa made up for his earlier mistake by putting on Gurenko for Yordi (although that left him without a striker), and ten minutes later he brought on Vellisca to replace Garitano, who was close to getting a second booking. Still Salva should have levelled the scores when he missed with only Láinez to beat, and Jamelli went close to sentencing the match at the other end.

Towards the end of the match Losantos sent off Correa for supposedly diving in the penalty area, although cameras suggested that Rebosio had actually brought him down. Atlético's physical trainer was sent off as well for protesting as nerves got the better of him. There was still time though for Luque to try his luck but his shot went wide, and after losing two finals in a row the team from the capital went out a stage earlier this year. They must now pick themselves up for another season in the second division, and players such as Salva and Hugo Leal could have played their last match for the "Colchoneros" as the club puts them up for sale to finance another "year in hell". Zaragoza go on to play the 25th final of the "copa del rey" in Sevilla next Saturday, looking to win their fifth cup winners title in their long history and consequently a place in the UEFA cup for next season. Even if they lose the final they could still qualify for Europe if their opponents are Barcelona (who are already in the Champions League), but if they have to meet Celta they must win, or else seventh placed Villarreal will take the last UEFA spot instead.
