Racing Santander 1 -
Zaragoza 1
Racing Santander gave
themselves an outside chance of qualifying for the semi-finals for the first
time in their history after coming from behind to draw against Zaragoza. The
visitors surprised them with a goal less than a minute from the kick off,
Ferrón picking up the ball after Yordi headed on Vellisca's cross to
beat Ceballos from close range. The Racing keeper, only just recovered from an
appendicitis operation, was only in the side after Lemmens injured himself in a
pre-match warm up, and he must have wished he was back in his nice warm bed.
After the goal though it was virtually all Racing, with Juanmi on his best form
keeping out shots from all and sundry, and in particular Mazzoni, Arzeno and
Amavisca in the second half. Referee García-Aranda sent off Zaragoza's
Aragón ten minutes in to the second half for a second bookable offence,
and Luis Costa brought on defender Cuartero for Montenegro shortly afterwards
to defend the result. A double change by Manzano at half time, replacing Jaime
and Preciado with Morán and Manjarín, made the difference, and it
was Manjarín's cross, headed backwards by a defender, which let in
Arzeno to beat Juanmi at last with a well directed header.
