Second round

Mallorca 2 - Ceahlaul Piatra 1
Mallorca won the first leg match of their Intertoto cup tie with Romanian side Ceahlaul Piatra by 2 - 1. With first team players all on holiday, the club fielded their B side for this tie. Mallorca's goals were scored by Pelegrin and Güiza in the first half.

Ceahlaul Piatra 3 - Mallorca 1
Mallorca have been eliminated from the Intertoto cup by Romanian's Ceahlaul Piatra. Ceahlaul won the second leg match in Romania by 3-1 to give them a 4-3 victory overall. Mallorca, who were playing with their B team squad as all first team players are still on holiday, levelled the match at 1-1 in the first half through Güiza, but two goals in the second half finished them off.

Third round

Celta 3 - Pelister Vitola 0
15th July. Celta won this first leg match with two late goals in the last ten minutes from Cáceres and McCarthy. McCarthy had given the home side the lead in the first half. Pelister only just made it to Vigo in time for the match, and changed on the plane to save time. Celta were missing key players such as Karpin and Mostovoi, but expect to have a full squad for the second leg in a week's time.

Pelister Vitola 1 - Celta 2
22nd July. Celta went through to the semi-finals of the Intertoto cup with a comfortable victory in Macedonia to give them a 5-1 result overall. With a side largely made up of youngsters they went into a 0-2 lead with goals from Pablo Couñaga and Mena early in the second half. Although Momivovski pulled one back 15 minutes from time the result was never in doubt, and Celta go on to play Aston Villa in the next round, with the first leg in Vigo on Wednesday 26th July.

Semi-final

Celta 1 - Aston Villa 0
26th July. A last minute goal by South African striker Benni McCarthy gave Celta a 1-0 lead against Aston Villa in the first leg of their Intertoto cup semi final. Giovanella struck the woodwork twice in the first half, and James saved well from McCarthy in the second. However the Villa keeper blotted his copybook in the last minute when he let McCarthy through to score. The return match is to be played in Birmingham on 2nd August, with the victorious team to play the winners of the tie between Zenit St. Petersburg and Bradford City in one of the three finals.

Aston Villa 1 - Celta 2
2nd August. Benni McCarthy once again proved to be the hero for Celta who go through to one of the three Intertoto cup finals after eliminating Aston Villa. McCarthy scored a goal in each half, the first with a crossed shot and the second a header from a corner, with Barry pulling one back from the penalty spot just before half time. Earlier Celta keeper Pinto saved another penalty, this time from Merson. The match will be remembered though for the unbelievably bad performance by the Swiss referee Dieter Schoch, an early contender for our white stick award. As well as the two penalties, Schoch sent off three players in incomprehensible circumstances (Velasco, Taylor and Thompson), produced a mountain of unnecessary yellow cards including two to Juanfran without sending him off, and was corrected by the fourth referee when he blew the final whistle two minutes before full time (surely the Swiss have reliable watches?). Celta now go on to play Zenit St. Petersburg of Russia, who beat Bradford by 4-0 on aggregate. The first leg will be in Vigo on 8th August and the return in St. Petersburg on 22nd.

Final

Celta 2 - Zenit St. Petersburg 1
8th August. Once again Celta left it to the last minute to take a lead into the second leg of this competition. Celta were at a disadvantage, having only just started their preseason, whereas Zenit are in the middle of their league. The difference showed when Igonin gave the visitors the lead early on, although Karpin levelled the scores in the 20th minute after a pass from Pablo Couñaga. That seemed to be it until substitute Mostovoi floated over a free kick in injury time, and Juanfran rose to head past the keeper to the joy of the 12,000 crowd. The German referee Herbert Fandel sent off Gustavo López seventeen minutes from the end, which means that he will miss the second leg in two weeks time. New striker Catanha will not be eliglible as he was signed after registration closed.

Zenit St. Petersburg 2 - Celta 2
22nd August. Celta's manager Víctor Fernández s middle name must be Houdini. His team were down and out after Popovic gave the Russians a two goal lead on the night and 3-2 on aggregate with a lobbed goal in the 34th minute and a header in the 63rd. However Karpin levelled the aggregate score with a speculative shot from outside of the penalty area with eight minutes to go after good work from substitute Pablo Couñago, and just when it looked as if the tie would go into extra time, up popped top scorer Benni McCarthy in a crowded goalmouth to stab home the winner in injury time after Couñago's shot was blocked, The result means that Celta win their final (one of three) and more importantly, go through to the first round of the UEFA cup.
