Two late goals by Anderlecht
gave Real Madrid their first defeat in the second phase of the Champions
League. It was a match of little importance, with Madrid already qualified for
the quarter finals as group champions, and Del Bosque gave a start to several
players who have not played much this season. Raúl was left back in
Spain despite a successful late appeal against the one match ban imposed by
UEFA for scoring with his hand last week, and Hierro, Figo and Makelele also
stayed at home, the last two suspended after conveniently picking up their
third yellow cards in the competition last week. In their absence Helguera
dropped back to defence, with club captain Sanchís making his 100th
appearance in Europe alongside Rivera, Celades and Savio in midfield, and
Munitis occupying Raúl's place up front.
The many changes to the
Madrid side left them void of ideas, and after a brief flurry in the opening
minutes in which Roberto Carlos shot just wide, the rest of the first half
belonged to Anderlecht. Youla in particular had several chances to put his side
ahead, and only good goalkeeping by Casillas kept the scores level at half
time. Morientes hardly saw the ball at all, and with an hour gone Del Bosque
decided to rest him and bring on Tote, with Solari replacing Roberto Carlos
shortly afterwards. Milojevic saved well from Tote a few minutes after the
striker came on, but with Goor on top form Anderlecht came looking for the
winner.
Casillas punched clear a
dangerous cross with giant substitute Koller menacing, but he could do nothing
a few minutes later when another substitute Dindane finished off after Goor
laid the ball in. The Belgian midfielder added another himself in injury time
much to the delight of his fans, and if nothing else Anderlecht added half a
million Swiss Francs to their bank balance for the win. Youngster Rubén
came on for Sanchís near the end to make his first team debut, and
Solari ended the match limping. In the end a match of little importance, but
the players who were given their chance here must be disappointed that they
were unable to impress their manager further. Del Bosque will return to his
first choice line up this weekend. Madrid were drawn to play Galatasaray in the
quarter finals. |
