One of the most memorable
comebacks in European history took Deportivo to the gates of the last eight.
The Coruña side were totally down and out when Leroy scored his second
of the night to give Paris Saint Germain a three goal lead with only 35 minutes
remaining of the game. But Depor didn't give up as manager Javier Irureta put
on all his big guns in a desperate gamble to save the day. On came Pandiani and
then Diego Tristán to join first choice centre forward Roy Makaay as ex
Athletic Bilbao manager Luis Fernández did just the opposite for the
Frenchmen, packing his defence with fresh legs to defend their lead.
And the ploy worked, with
half an hour of the most exciting football as the home side bombarded the
visitors goal with high balls to take advantage of their big men up front. The
star of the night was 'rifle' Pandiani, sporting an apparently new nickname due
to overbooking on his old one, 'el loco', and he fired three times on a
rain-sodden night to take his tally to five in this competition. All four goals
came from headers, two from corners, as PSG lost their way, with ex Barcelona
defender Dehú and his colleagues not knowing where the next one was
coming from.
Luis was missing some of his
key players for this match, with recent signings from Espanyol Pochettino and
De Lucas cup-tied and Anelka injured. Another Barcelona man, Arteta, on loan
from the Catalans until the end of the season, had however played a good game
in midfield as PSG raced into the lead, with Okocha taking advantage of a
punched clearance by returning keeper Molina to open the scoring and Anelka's
replacement Leroy impressing with his two goals. However with Mauro Silva and
Djalminha taking command, Depor finally got a grip to end any chance of PSG
progressing further and keeping their hopes alive. They still need at least a
point against AC Milan in the San Siro stadium next Tuesday, but on this form
they might just do it. It would be a pity to miss out after a match like this.
