On a rainy night in Holland, Valencia secured their second win in a row in the Champions League without really playing well. Their manager Héctor Cúper was unsure about his starting line up until shortly before the match, with Mendieta playing with a cast on the fingers he broke in the last match and Kily coming back into the side despite not having fully recovered from a muscle injury (and after having got into an argument with his manager about being left out of the side last weekend). In the end the only change Cúper made though was to replace off form Zahovic with Juan Sánchez, who came on and scored as substitute in the last match.

He did have to make another change fairly on in to the game however, bringing on Milla when Deschamps limped off in the ninth minute with a leg injury which may keep him out for three weeks or so, and he used his second substitute at half time, replacing Kily with Vicente. That was not before the Argentinian midfielder did the job he came here to do however, breaking the deadlock just before half time with a shot that took a deflection off a defender and off the crossbar before entering the goal. That took the pressure off Valencia, who were struggling to contain the rapid Dutch wingers early in the game.

After the break Heerenveen continued to attack, but they were frequently off target and Cañizares did not have to work too hard. With Mendieta commanding midfield and Milla covering well for Deschamps, the result never looked too much in danger, and Valencia go on to top their group with a maximum six points. Next week they are at home to Olympique Lyon, and a good result there will see them almost through to the next stage.
